Reflections

மாறியது கண்ணாடியில் தெரியும் பிம்பம் மட்டுமல்ல .. நானும் வெற்றிகள் தந்த போதை தலை விட்டு தரை இறங்க தோல்விகள் பழகிப் போன வலிகளாய் ஒதுங்கி நிற்க தொலைந்து போய்க் கண்டு பிடித்த இன்பங்கள் மேலோங்க மாறியது கண்ணாடியில் தெரியும் பிம்பம் மட்டுமல்ல .. கடந்தது போல் வருவதும் நல்லதுக்கே என்று புன்னகையோடு காத்திருக்கும் நானும்!

It is ages since I sat and wrote a few lines.. After almost a year full of hearing about his deeds and visiting his shrines in several temples, somehow couldn't resist writing a few lines on Bhagavad Ramanujar on his 1000th Thirunakshathram.. Vaazhi ethirasan! Vaazhi ethirasan! எங்கள் எதிராசன் ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் தாண்டியும் மனதில் கோவில் கொண்ட அழகன் ஆலயக் கதவுகள் அனைவர்க்கும் திறந்திட  வழி வகுத்த முதல் தலைவன் வேதத்திற்கு புது விளக்கம் சொல்லி  விசிஷ்டாத்வைதம் தந்த அறிஞன் பாரதம் முழுதும் சோர்வின்றி நடந்து  வைணவம் வளர்த்த முனிவன் கலியுகத்தில் பக்தி தழைக்க  பல புதுமைகள் கொணர்ந்த நற்தலைவன்  எங்கள் எதிராசன் ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் தாண்டியும் மனதில் கோவில் கொண்ட அழகன்!

செஞ்சொற் கவிகாள் உயிர்காத்தாட் செய்மின் திருமா லிருஞ்சோலை வஞ்சக் கள்வன் மாமாயன் மாயக் கவியாய் வந்து என் நெஞ்சு முயிரு முள் கலந்து நின்றார் அறியா வண்ணம் என் நெஞ்சு முயிரும் அவையுண்டு  தானே யாகி நிறைந்தானே! In this pasuram Nammazhwar warns all poets who think of singing on Thirumaaliruncholai Kallazhagar as they are bound to be completely bowled over and subsumed.  Left with same feeling after returning from the temple yesterday. The moolavar here is holding all 5 weapons but yet his face is so calm and beautiful!

Took this picture at the marina today morning. Among many things was reminded of Kalki's description in the beginning of one of the chapters. Followed up subseq uently with a google search and was able to get the text! From Ponniyin Selvan, Volume 3 Chapter 9 பொழுது புலர்ந்தது, கருநிற அழகியான இரவெனும் தேவி உலக நாயகனை விட்டுப் பிரிய மனமின்றிப் பிரிந்து செல்ல நேர்ந்தது. நாயகனைத் தழுவியிருந்த அவளுடைய கரங்கள் இலேசாகக் கழன்று விழுந்தன. வாழ்க்கையிலே கடைசி முத்தம் கொடுப்பவளைப் போல் கொடுத்து விட்டு இரவெனும் தேவி இன்னும் தயங்கி நின்றாள். “மாலையில் மறுபடியும் சந்திப்போம். நாலு ஜாம நேரந்தானே இந்தப் பிரிவு? சந்தோஷமாகப் போய்வா!” என்றது உலகம். இரவு தயங்கித் தயங்கி உலகத்தைத் திரும்பித் திரும்பிப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டு சென்றது. உள்ளத்திலே அன்பில்லாத கள்ளக் காதலனைப் போல் இரவு பிரிந்து சென்றதும் உலகம் மகிழ்ச்சியினால் சிலிர்த்தது. “ஆகா; விடுதலை!” என்று ஆயிரமாயிரம் பறவை இனங்கள் பாடிக் களித்தன. மரங்களிலும், செடிகளிலும் மொட்டுக்கள் வெடித்து மலர்ந்தன. எங்கிருந்தோ வண்டுகள் மந்தை மந்தையாக வந்து இதழ் வி...

On Independence day a few years back, I heard a very ordinary song on independence. I left that place wondering why people had to take the trouble to write something new when the mahakavi had written so many beautiful songs. That also made me wonder what I would write if at all I did describing independence. Believe me, I thought a thousand times before writing this but when an idea like this starts forming it is very difficult not to write it down .. with due apologies to the mahakavi காற்றில் மிதக்கும் கொடியின் அசைவில் புன்னகை புரியும் சுதந்திரம் கரையைத் தழுவும் கடலின் அலையில் பொங்கும் இன்பம் சுதந்திரம் மலர்கள் தூவும் சோலைகள் நிழலில் தங்கும் அமைதி சுதந்திரம் மழையின் முடிவில் வானில் விளையும் வானவில் அழகில் சுதந்திரம் எண்ணம் யாவும் எழுத்தில் வடிக்கும் கவிஞனின் படைப்பில் சுதந்திரம்!

Standing in attention for the National anthem after several years made me feel like a kid .. Same setting, same "Old" secretary speech and the usual programmes.. I almost found myself on the way to the queue for laddus, till I saw my little girl rushing towards me in her guides dress .. The teacher at the exit however still insisted that I take a sweet.  The laddu is now a Perk:-)Alas things have changed!

Watched Prabhu Solomon's Kumki today. It is a different and interesting setting that the director has taken for the movie. After the Devar days, I think it is ages since a movie was made around an elephant and atleast I have not seen one with a mahout as the hero. The movie definitely has a positives: The hero and heroine are without doubt capable actors and hold promise for the future. The locations shot are really out of the world and there are moments where you pinch yourselves to check if you are not dreaming. It is definitely a wonder how some of these shots were taken, especially the ones near the two water falls. The director does deserve credit for effectively bringing out the innocence and simplicity in the life of the tribals. Thambi Ramiah, the national award winner for Mynaa, does a good job but somehow you are left with the feeling that he is given a few more scenes than required . It could be the success in the previous encounter that led to this but one does fee...
